NEA Making Media 2021
(answer these in as much detail as you can – it is an initial ideas process so do not worry if some ideas are incomplete. Once you have completed this send to Mr Welch and copy and put on your blog under the heading ‘Initial Proposal’
Overview of music
video idea (this could include potential song choices and initial ideas)
I am planning to use a radiohead song, preferably a lesser
known one that has a vague meaning to allow myself more creative freedom; I
might be wrong, or anything in its right place.
For the video I want
to use the industrial imagery of where I lived, with lots of low angle camera
shots to create feelings of suppression, with overlays used throughout the
video to act as a visual bridge between shots.
What sort of music
video is it? (eg: Performance/narrative/mixed approach)
I think the video will lean more on the narrative side of
music videos. For the narrative I am not too sure as due to the brief I need at
least two people from two socio-economic backgrounds. I think for the video I
want there to be an idea of assimilation and rejection, as if the character was
in a totalitarian regime.
Tell me more about
your video and why it will work well for this song
‘I might be wrong
I might be wrong
I could have sworn I saw a light coming on,
I used to think
I used to think
There was no future left at all’
The song has a very hopeless tone, which I think could work
well for the setting, and the political themes of government dismissal of these
areas.
What kinds of genre
conventions would we expect to see? What existing music videos or media texts will
you be taking your inspiration from?
The genre conventions of temporal relationships, as well as
lip syncing.
Videos for me to steal be influenced by:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOa--Dhu11M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmYT79tPvLg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuQG6_evFc8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scif2vfg1ug – not necessarily political but I like the aesthetic of this video, I might have two visual looks throughout the video, as a contrast, or to signify a flashback.
How will your music
video fulfil the requirements of the NEA brief? +
Range of camera shots, including shot distances, angles and
movement as appropriate to a
music video.
• Editing of footage appropriate to a music video.-
subjective but the music will generally be in minor, so the visual aesthetic
will suit the mood of the song.
• At least two different uses of mise-en-scène.- Some of my
photos as shown before should fulfil this.
• At least two characters representing at least two different social groups (e.g. as defined by age, gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality).- Character from working class background, upper class oppressor.
• Graphics/titles to include the name of the track and the
name of the band/artist.- I will include one at the start, in bold filling up
the screen, similar to an Idles music video.
Who is the audience
for your band/artist/music video? What do they like, do? What sort of
attitudes, values and beliefs might they have and how will your video reflect
these?
For my fictional artist the demographic will be ages 16-50,
as the bands message is wide spread and appeals to people from a wide range of
demographic, the band generally would have been known for its left wing views.
The video will be supportive of these views, but I want the video to be subtle,
and not have a message that is ‘in your face.’
Tell me about the
equipment, personnel and locations you are going to need to create this.
For the video I would preferably want to use a camera, to
use dolly zooms, and focal changes. Advantages that would not be possible with
a phone, COVID-19 may not allow this though. I was also thinking of getting a
fish eye lens for my phone to get some shots for the video. The video will only
require one other person, probably Tom, and I could also act in it, this will
work for the isolated feel of the video, and practically easier to organise. For
locations, I would use Clay Cross, Chesterfield, and possibly Sheffield, again
depending on COVID-19, additionally I would like to film early in the morning
to have an isolating feel, and good lighting.
What sort of
organisational tasks will you do to make sure you can achieve this?
The video will require story boards, as well as good timing
for the filming of the specific times, and locations.
What issues or
challenges do you predict facing when making this video?
COVID- 19 will be a prevailing issue around my video, for
equipment, and locations especially.
How will your website
link to these ideas? What extra content may you have on your website? How will
the artist be promoted and/or represented?
The website will feature album covers, artwork for the
songs, and a short interview of the main singer, as well as a fake short
biography of the band.
