Music Video Aesthetics

Here I will be outlining some music video aesthetics that I find compelling, and could use in my own project: Idles: Mother, 2017   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuQG6_evFc8&ab_channel=IDLES The Song's aim,  https://genius.com/Idles-mother-lyrics#about ' Mother deconstructs the term “Mother Fucker” into its literal and metaphorical meaning.  Metaphorically, the singer’s mother was fucked over by a system that required her to work increasingly long hours, mostly unpaid, just to provide for her children.  Literally, the singer is furious at how little empathy men can have for women over sexual assault. It’s a pervasive and complex phenomenon that makes women fear for their lives. How can you mother fuckers not see how terrible mother fuckers are.' ? How does the aesthetic achieve this? The video uses a pastel colour palette, with lots of pinks, and off white; which are traditionally seen as feminine, and maternal colours. This also subverts the genre c...

The song exposition uses a traditional south African guitar, to put the audience into a false sense of security, the video follows this with a long take, that last for around a third of the video, temporal imagery is used with the gun shot coinciding with the beat drop of the song. The location of the warehouse also allows as a frame for the composition of the shot. The gun is taken away with care on a piece of red cloth, juxtaposed by the man's dead body being dragged away; this motif, of commodities being more valuable than human lives is repeated throughout the video. The next shot is of a choir, with again music that is associated with positivity, and happiness, which is again immediately juxtaposed with the choirs murder, a reference to the 2015 massacre at Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. At this point we see the contrast between the foreground, and background with Glover having a constant smile, whilst violence, and unrest happens in...

NEA Making Media 2021   (answer these in as much detail as you can – it is an initial ideas process so do not worry if some ideas are incomplete. Once you have completed this send to Mr Welch and copy and put on your blog under the heading ‘Initial Proposal’ Overview of music video idea (this could include potential song choices and initial ideas) I am planning to use a radiohead song, preferably a lesser known one that has a vague meaning to allow myself more creative freedom; I might be wrong, or anything in its right place. For the video I want to use the industrial imagery of where I lived, with lots of low angle camera shots to create feelings of suppression, with overlays used throughout the video to act as a visual bridge between shots. What sort of music video is it? (eg: Performance/narrative/mixed approach) I think the video will lean more on the narrative side of music videos. For the narrative I am not too sure as due to the brief I need at least two peo...
